Donât forget that the focus is on your project and its significance. Each section should end with a summary statement about how your research will add value. These particular sentences where you spell out your contribution to each field might be a good place to use boldface type, as suggested in Chapter 6. You do not want this information to escape the notice of the reviewer.
Citations and References
The Theoretical Orientation and Significance section is where you often see the most references in a proposal. For the most part, you should cite the existing literature that you discuss and use references. The bibliography should list all the references in your proposal and should not include any others. This becomes challenging when there are restrictive page limits, and you will have to judiciously decide who to leave in and out of your discussion. However, do not neglect to cite the most prominent scholars and articles in your field.
In certain shorter proposals, we have seen successful examples that do not cite other literature specifically, but instead refer more generally to current understandings in the field. These include Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships, for example. However, as a graduate student or junior faculty member, we do not recommend this cavalier approach in proposal writing. As a novice scholar and proposal writer, the reviewers may be suspicious of your training if you do not cite anyone. They may also be insulted that you have not acknowledged those who have established the foundation for your work. If you question whether and how much to use references in your proposal, find some sample successful proposals from the agency to identify patterns and/or call the program officer to ask for recommendations about best practices.
